FF7: Earth, or elsewhere?

The planet that Final Fantasy VII is inspired by our own planet, undoubtedly, but I think it is meant to represent a different, fictional planet despite the animation of Supernova.

That and... well, someone else already pointed out that Supernova only looked that way in the western releases.

Didn't something like the Ultimania or part of the Compilation or someone at Square explicitly say it was called Gaia?

It's been known as Gaia for quite a while. Though not the same Gaia as FFIX, I don't think.

I recall one of them (Nomura I think) once also alluding to the idea that Shinra is a descendant of the kid in FFX-2 and that at some point they were capable of space travel and moved on from Spira (presumably after sucking the Farplane dry!)
