Thread: Fireflies

    Fireflies

I just went outside to write for a bit and there were 10,000 fireflies blinking away in my yard. I was hit with such a pang of nostalgia that I almost cried. Well, not really, I'm a man so I don't do that.

Did anyone else catch fireflies as a kid? Anybody squash fireflies to make their tongue glow?

I once got a thousand hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs. It was neat.

But that was years ago. I didn't see a single lightning bug last year, and I've only seen one this year so far.

    Sucks, I love lightning bugs.

We don't have them where I live. I didn't see my first firefly til I was 18 or so and it was beautiful. I've only gotten to see them a handful of times since and I am just too enamored with watching them to actually make the effort to catch one.

Have I ever seen them? Probably not.

I've never seen a real firefly in my life. We don't have them here.

I didn't really expect so many people to not have fireflies where they live. It's sad. You're all missing out.

I love them! We haven't had too many this year though.

There is a decent amount of them in my area. It makes my parent's decent sized back yard look very cool at night. As a kid, I squashed one from time to time on the ground so the light would smear on the ground for a bit. I quickly realized how cruel that was, so that didn't last too long. I also used to flash a flash light towards a pack of them so they would try to have sex with it. I was a weird little bastard.

Damn things swarmed the camp I went to a few years ago, got into everything, all the tents, all the cabins, all the food, everything. It had rained the night before so a bunch even managed to dig themselves face first into the mud, leaving only their glowing backsides facing up as a final fudge you to the whole camp. The only good part was watching one of the locals cats trying to be a good neighbor and eat them all. After a while he started burping and one or two actually flew out of his mouth still alive.

I would love to see some fireflies someday.

I played with a lot of different bugs when I was young. I loved them all. They kept me entertained on those days I hadn't eaten and needed a distraction from my stomach feeling like it was tearing itself in half.

Well my plan was to try to video them tonight, but it rained and apparently fireflies aren't into making love in the rain. Disappointing. I'll try again tomorrow.

I had always thought lightning bugs/fireflies were ubiquitous until a few years ago when an acquaintance who was visiting from Texas saw them coming out, looked fearfully at me and asked what was going on. And I got real sad for everybody that doesn't have them.

As it is, they get in the trees here and it's like Christmas lights. I tend to leave my window open and watch them while I fall asleep.

One more reason why I will never, ever move away.

Owl City. Why did I know that?
