Cid Foster was nervous. The ten-year-old strolled up and down the length of his tree house as he awaited the arrival of his friends. He checked his reflection in his mum’s brand new baking tray which he had hung on the wall. He adjusted the cardboard crown he had made the previous week. “Pull it together” he thought. “You’re King, after all!”
There was a knock on the hatch below his feet. They were here.
One by one his friends entered and lined up in front of him. Cid tried to project his voice as he addressed them.
“Welcome, my friends, to your knighthood ceremony” said Cid. “You will now step forward and present me with gifts worthy of your knighthood status. Please place them in the toy box.”
Cid turned away as his friends took turns to place their gift in the box. What possible delights had his knights gifted him with? What treasures had they unearthed from the four corners of the globe?
He turned back round and approached the box. “Now we will see whether your gifts make you worthy of your new status” said Cid.
He examined his gifts…
A fake toe, a lightbulb, some jawbreakers, half a pool cue, a hammer, a packet of sausages and a tangerine…
Cid looked up at his friends.
“Yeah… I’ll let you know…”
