One of my physics professors in college developed the relativistic model of the Higgs mechanism, which implied the existence of Higgs bosons. I don't pretend to understand the physics behind it, but this is really cool if it's true. It's a pretty big if though and nobody wants to claim that they've found it unless they're damn sure of it.

They actually claimed it was found. This means they are damn sure. "5 sigma" certainty is the standard for people to believe you discovered something, which means you found it with 99.99994% certainty.
