Cloud and Tifa, because I used to fantasize heavily about it as a kid. They, as a couple, have been to every corner of my mind.

I loved the triangle in FFVII. I always thought Tifa's role in it was the most tragic - it's like she would have to replace Aerith, staying in her shadow. And it's debatable how much of Cloud's affection towards Aerith was him just channeling Zack. And Crisis Core actually made me squee like a little fangirl at the cuteness Zack and Aerith's moments together emitted.

I also love Balthier/Fran. They're just so subtle, and yet you can see how well they understand each other and how much they care for each other. It's never the focus., we don't see it begin or end, they are just there. Anyone saying they were not in love with each other - OK, you could say there is not enough evidence in game. But for me, there are two things in the game that convince me that it is indeed love - Fran left her village, possibly forever, her whole family left behind, to be with Balthier. I mean, to be a pirate with him, but still - it's no wonder Balthier wooed her. He's so charming he'd convince me to ride an airship with him, and I'm a straight guy. And second of all - the end of the game. It's been a while since I played it, but there is a scene when he thinks she's dead, or something, and it's just so heartwarming. And then there's this artwork by Yoshida:

My favourite couple in FF, bar none. And my second favorite couple in any video game (right behind Shulk and Fiora )

Balthier and Fran was by far the sexiest. And subtle. After that, eh, I don't know... I guess Zidane and Garnet or Locke/Celes/Terra.

I also thought Zack and Aeris were cute in Crisis Core.

I agree with you that it would make a good story; the question is would it make a good Final Fantasy story. Real alienation and bitterness can be kind of a downer, and detrimental to the "all-ages" flair the series has tried to maintain so far.

For an example, see Revolutionary Road. Deals with mature themes of love, sure. But not cathartic fantasy, at all. Really, really bleak.

I wish we could have had a bit more of the Seifer/Rinoa backstory in FFVIII.

I took the liberty of taking the demographics debate posts out of this thread and putting them into a new one, because I think it's an interesting thing to talk about with lots of room for discussion:

Continue talking about romance and such here!

Honestly, when I think about my the type of love story I want, I think of Macross Plus or Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both had a love story involving older people (late 20s) and their baggage from the past. Of anything, I think people could get behind it since the former lovers bickering could be funny to watch on screen, and I feel you get to see more of the characters personality.
