How much are they changing things? Like it going to be a completely new storyline? Will things like characters cross over to 2.0?

The entire server and client software is remade from scratch. Or nearly from scratch. The game will (probably) be different enough to really be considered two entirely different games, just set in the same fictional world. And with the ability to import characters from the "previous game". It is not "just a patch" or "just an expansion".
