That was one of the big reasons I liked it (that and it being good anyway). After nearly 20 years of playing the other FF's in the series at the time, playing something that wasn't like the older titles was a breath of fresh air, and a much needed kick in the ass for a series that had stagnated a bit. Then they abandoned it and made FFXIII. Ah well, at least I got a brief glimpse of some hope.

and the only ones I abandoned before finishing were FF5 and FF12. Someday I intend to go back and give 5 another try, but I don't feel the same way with 12.
