i have that chumbawamba cd
The Rolling Stones were very influential, but I don't care for much of their work. Wild Horses is good.
As for British bands, my two popular favorites are Oasis and Pink Floyd.
As far as the metal scene and much smaller bands, Sylosis is amazing.
Stereophonics
Manic Street Preachers
Oasis
The Fray
Lost Prophets (not everyone's cup of tea but one of the most influential metal/rock bands of recent years)
Bullet For My Valentine (same as above)
Rolling Stones (smurf y'all they're amazing)
Beatles
Muse
Coldplay (as much as I hate them, musically they're important)
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
The Who
The Police
Queen
Garbage
Feeder
Gorillaz
Blur
Michael Buble (no I'm not joking)
Radiohead
Spice Girls (they had a few decent songs, mostly trite but try and deny the impact they had in the late 90s)
Take That (see above)
Mumford Sons (they're London based)
Fleetwood Mac
Fatboy Slim
The Prodigy
Pink Floyd
Eric Clapton
David Bowie
If we bring Ireland in to the mix as much as I hate most of these:
Westlife
Boyzone
The Corrs
The Cranberries
U2
Need I go on?
My favorite British band would have to the Stone Roses. They are just so smurfing good.
Of course, I'm torn. I'm in love with The Who, The Beatles go without saying, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, The Police, Pink Floyd, etc. have already been listed, but they are all absolutely stellar.
If I were to go with single musician, however, I'd pick Bowie. I love Bowie, and it was a bummer to see him not perform at the Olympics.
Wha? Is 'Paint it Black' the only song you guys have listened to? 'Can't you hear me Knockin'' is pretty much universally loved, and 'Sympathy for the Devil' is one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Heck, they went pretty unique with 'Ruby Tuesday', and 'Street Fighting Man' is just a perfect song altogether. This is all subjective, obviously, but if anything, I found that 'Paint it Black' was one of their weaker songs when you look at their whole catalogue. 'Gimme Shelter' is my favorite song by them, personally, and I certainly wouldn't call it garbage. I've left a bunch of songs out, but you get the idea. Give them another chance!

I just realized no one listed Dire Straitshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dire_Straits!
I can't be the only person that thinks they're awesome, right?
Didn't realise they were British. Dire Straits are pretty damn good.
