I rarely like to draw attention to myself so I avoid having parties that are centred around me, especially if it's centred around only me. I do however like to hang out with friends so would opt for hanging out at a pub or something instead of having an official party.

But for it to be named a "Goodbye Person!" party, they have to be gone for a few months plus. Otherwise it's a bit weird.

I think if I were leaving for an extended period of time, I would get together with close personal friends and subtly leave a door open for others (by making a short FaceBook post which tends to get ignored).

If my RL friends throw me a going away party, I'd better be frakking dying. I mean it. I left lots of friends behind in Nova Scotia without even saying goodbye. I was worse to my friends in Alberta, I assured them all I was coming back for another year and then when my plane "home" left I wasn't on it.
