It's a formatting style for when you make posts. It allows you to do all the nifty stuff without having to use tags or codes, it'll do it right in the box you make your post in. It stands for "What you see is what you get" which is the standard term for that type of formatting as opposed to using markup code and such. I don't use it as default mode, but the top left button in the editor lets you switch it on and off at convenience, so I do that when I want to format something nicely.
