    Default Kicking it old school

We all know that FFIX was a throwback to the other Final Fantasy games and as such includes an absolute plethora of references. Which ones do you like best?

Zidane commenting on a "guy with spikey hair who used to carry a sword like this" was probably my favourite. Quite subtle, but still nice.

Also does the fact that Steiner loves Gyshal Pickles make him something of an ONION KNIGHT?!

Yeah the reference to Cloud in the weapons shop in Lindblum is great. And the Tantalus orchestra playing Rufus' Welcoming March from FFVII in Evil Forest.

And if we can open it out to references to non-FF stuff, I like the 'Damnit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a miracle worker!' line.

I loved the Doga's Artifact, Unne's Mirror secret. That tune made me play FF III on NES and I do not regret it.

Vivi looking like a vintage black mage, Garnet in a white mage robe, and the highlights on the heels and toes of Zidane's boots making him look like one of the FF3 NES sprites stuck out to me. Oh, and Freya mimicking certain mannerisms of Kain. Loved most of the references in this game.

Except that I'm afraid. I thought that was a bit forced and cheesy and I wasn't sure whether to be amused or not.

IX was my first in the series so I didn't get any of those references at the time and now, uhh. they don't hold much value, but I do like the III tune that plays in Black Mage village if you have the artifact and mirror.

Perhaps not, but they are references to old(er) school games!

    Why do you mention this?
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

I love FF9 but it's pretty much guaranteed that I will hit reset once the ATB gauges start flashing to indicate the final boss' death because I think its ending is very phoned-in.
