To address your first point: There'd be little to no risk involved in a remake of 7. It'd sell like proverbial hotcakes. Half the reason it hasn't aged well is because of the low production values that went into it; poor modelling, poor sound quality, poor translation, etc. As such, it's pretty much the only entry that actually deserves an actual remake, and they'd do it right (if at all) this time given how much the franchise for 7 has exploded.

I doubt they'd make any gameplay changes "to bring it up to "modern RPG standards", whatever that means," whatever that means. It's a JRPG from 1997. No one's expecting massive industry innovations. And if any changes or additions are made, purists will still buy it, S-E gets their dosh, fans get their remake and only the purists lose; everyone else wins.

For your second point, of course there aren't any PSX remakes listed under Remastered releases. Apples and Oranges.

No one except Americans cares about your third point. We already did all that stuff

Personally, I'm not too fussed with whether or not it actually makes it out. The original, DVD-based FFX is sufficiently high-def for me, and I live in one of those privileged countries that got the Dark Aeons and other goodies already. Given the choice, I'd rather have some kind of magical update that made my PS3 backward-compatible with PS2 titles.

I'd love an FF7 remake as much as the next guy, but yeah, I'm not sure it'd really work. Consider all the Wall Market stuff - a lot of that relies on the poor graphics. Can you imagine Mukki and the gang raping Cloud in the hot tub in HD, or his cross dressing, or Corneo's place? They all rely on highly deformed characters bouncing around. Translate it to HD and it'd never get past the censors, the whole part of the game would need to be rewritten.

Things like the overworld don't really translate to the natural realism of HD either, hence they got rid of them from FFX onwards.

Consider certain things that would be rather gory and graphic in the modern day, too.

And it'd be a lot of work to make it properly 3D instead of what it is now, which is like a 2D/Isomorphic/3D hybrid thing with fixed camera angles.

I think the only way I can see it working is a "remake lite" so to speak. Adding voice acting, redoing the FMVs (but I still wonder about what would be a particularly graphic one, the original of which already looks odd from lacking blood), repainting the backgrounds etc but keeping it in the same basic graphical model. It wouldn't pass as your usual blockbuster mega 3D cutting edge £50/$70 hit for the PS3/4, but it'd settle well into the tablet/phone gaming market where there's already been a revival of oldschool games with more of an emphasis on gameplay and nostalgia than cutting edge 3D stuff.

Same with something like FF9. Brahne looks weird enough already without trying to render her in 1080p with the level of detail expected in 2012. Vivi's detailed face being left to the imagination would also be more difficult. And he does have one, I remember Zidane mentioning it.

Erm, this being the FFX forum though. I'd be more than happy with a HD update and think this would be much easier and more sensible since it was already made on a near-as-dammit-to-HD platform.

    1) An FFVII remake is extremely risky and expensive. When was the last time you tried playing FFVII? If it was recently, you'll notice that it isn't that great (*gasp*). It has not aged well at all. An FFVII remake would require extensive gameplay changes to bring it up to "modern RPG standards", whatever that means. Unfortunately, if you change anything, purists will cry foul and hate on the game for having any changes at all, even if they're unequivocal improvements. It's lose-lose.

    2) FFX HD on the other hand is cheaper and easier. There are no HD remakes of PS1 games because they would require extensive (and expensive) redrawing of graphics assets. HD up-rezzing is relatively cheap, by comparison, especially with the PS2's impressive graphics, so there's less of a leap. Thus, you'd get a portable version of one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.

    3) FFX HD would most likely be based on FFX International. This version of the game included a bunch of bug fixes as well as a huge endgame sidequest involving the Dark Aeons. International wasn't even the final build to the game, either. FFX EU came out so late that it also had all the International bonuses. Thus, there's no reason for the FFX HD remake to be based on the vanilla FFX release. At worst, the International content would be locked behind DLC but that feels out of character, since no other HD remake has DLC.

    4) FFX > FFVII, u mad bro?
4 and 1 are waaaay off.

There's game studios that specialize in this kind of thing. If Square outsourced to them, like everyone else does, we would've gotten it the Tuesday after the announcement.

I want FFXII too. That's the one I want more.
