I do it sometimes, and with good reason. When you are handwriting numbers and letters alongside each other in serial numbers and whatnot, you need to ensure that everyone who reads what you wrote will be able to read each character correctly. 2 and Z are often mistaken for one another in particular. Depending on people's writing, I can confuse 9 and G, 6 and 0, 1 and 7 and of course 2 and Z. Most other letters and numbers are easy enough to work out.
