There is no "best party," though the story characters tend to be pretty powerful. I generally have slightly more physical fighters than magic users, and then just have fun from there. There are some classes you want to get to for certain abilities (e.g., Ninja for Two Swords, Bard for Move +3, etc.), but other than that I would just advise a variety.
