I think melodic metal takes a band from being only likeable by metalheads to being likeable by anyone.

First albums almost universally do suck.

Did you ever listen to Danger Days? I listened to Three Cheers in high school and didn't like it much, and then I saw the video for "Na Na Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na)" and loved it. The album is actually a concept piece in a Mad Max-ish post-apocalyptic world to make some social commentary. It's pretty great.
