    Default Heroes & Generals

The gaming industry has no shortage of WWII themed first-person shooters. There are more of them than you can shake a stick at. But Heroes & Generals, the love-child of a partnership between Danish studio Reto-Moto and Square Enix, promises just a little bit more.

An in-game shot showing warplanes attacking enemy troops.

It's not a simple FPS in the vein of Call of Duty or a grand scale strategy game along the lines of Hearts of Iron. It's both. Heroes & Generals is named because of this interesting function: players can choose to be a Hero, fighting on the frontline on-foot and in a variety of vehicles, or they can be a General, to ensure troops and combat resources are effectively placed.

A work-in-progress shot of the command screen.

It's in Beta phase now, and you can sign up for a Beta pass on the official website. It will be free to play when it gets released, by why not jump in now and have a chance to influence the end result?

Below is one of the trailers for the game, and it's quite a funny one at that. We'll keep our eyes on Heroes & Generals, but let us know if you get a beta pass and how things progress! Enjoy!

Sounds interesting but I don't like that it's free to play. Unless it's a GW or most other FPS free to play. Buy the game but playing online is free.

Also, the modern setting has been played out far worse than WW2. >__>

Feeling similar to Futan. Looks interesting and I may as well try it out. This kind of game has been a long time coming, with hints of it in Battlefield 2 and an ambitious full-on attempt with MAG. It would be awesome of a joint effort involving Square Enix pulled it off.

I think it's ironic that Free to Play has actually become a phrase that makes gamers skeptical of a game's quality and (even more ironically) it's pricing model. It's really hard to overcome that cynicism given the state of the games with that business model right now. But again, at least it gives me an incentive to just check it out when I'm bored on my PC one day.
