She awoke with a start, her mind already on fire with excitement. Today was the day! The day, the day, the big day - the Anniversary! She hopped out of bed with uncharacteristic speed and got ready in a tremendous hurry, thinking herself very clever for taking a shower last thing the night before to save time today. She dressed in her finest outfit, which she had spent days mulling over, planning, and trying out, and put on a pair of shining green emerald earrings and a fine, understated diamond necklace. Her sister helped with her makeup, subtle and accentuating her best features. She checked herself in the mirror and, after some tweaking, was satisfied. She smiled at herself, then before putting her shoes on and leaving the house, checked the date one last time. September 11.

She didn't like the date. It was ominous, and rightfully so. One hundred years ago to the day, what was then called the United States of America had been rocked by a horrific terror attack. Unfortunately, though, there were other anniversaries that fell on that day-- such as the one she was headed off to attend!-- so she had to do her best to ignore the somber mood around her and hope that her pocket communicator wasn't about to be buzzed by her superiors, as they tended to do on important calendar dates such as this.

She was wrong.

Damn, it was tough being a Time Agent.

But it wasn't as though their needs were going to get in the way of the Anniversary. No matter how grimey her hands were going to get, she was going to be back in time for the ceremony--looking immaculate, at that. So, with a fair amount of grace and patience, she caught the buzzing communicator into her hands just as it vibrated off the edge of her dresser. Her thumb deftly found the answer button. Don't you know what today is?! she wanted to yell into the device, but settled for a professional, "Yes?"

"Hello hello Agent Chuppyflops, this is Dave. DO YOU READ MY VOICES?" screamed Hugo, a voice from deep within the metal.

"Yes hello Hugo I am ready to do all that is command! Maybe. Tell me the news." croaked Chuppyflops, munching on a sliced yam.

"Well-" SMUUUUUUUUUSH!

A frenzied skeleton smashed gently through the bay window! 'Twas terrible and crimson and dripping with butter! Chuppyflops recoiled with horror and sorrow. The skeleton let out a screech like the sound of a thousand ducks flying into the heart of the sun.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" sang Chuppflops. "NOT AGAIN! NOT NOW!" and she plunged her rocket launcher into the waiting mouth of the zomby.

The creature exploded into a million pieces with the force of 1,000 toasters lit on fire by a poptart. "Perhaps today is a good day to die, indeed," she screamed. Just then, zombies on segways came bursting out of a nearby shrubbery. Some of the segways had only one wheel since zombies are used to moving slower due to limb.

Chuppyflopps darted out of the way by pressing the X button in time. A second late she might had to start over two hours earlier in her file since she forgot to save at the last opportunity. More perfectly timed dodges followed, but soon she was surrounded by the Segway Zombie Force^TM.

A smile cracked across her face like the rising sun of a desolate land. She then whispered...

"I know what I need to do." She opened her communicator. "This is Chuppyflopps. I need assistance. The Segway Zombie Force^TM has me surrounded." The zombies approached slowly, planning their strategy. Actually, they were just slow and stupid.

"We don....we can ma....befo...There isn't....ime." She caught some bits between the static on her communicator. Something must be interfering. It didn't matter. She had heard enough to understand. She knew what she had to do. The pushed the little red button on her communicator...

There was a blinding flash. She recalled a distant memory. It was Fall, and the leaves were coating the ground. Her mind was wandering, wishing to dance out there in the field rather than sit here listening to basic training. Her instructor was explaining the communicator, but she wasn't watching.

"Just whatever you do, don't hit this button unless there is no other option."

Her thoughts returned to the present as the burning sensation grew. She glanced down and her arm was made of pure fire. Around her, the Zombie Segway Force^TM had been defeated, blasted back by the initial blast and slowly melting into a fine soup.

There was no more fantasy to be enjoyed now. This was it. The world returned to its normal speed and Chuppyflops collapsed, not as a charred skeleton, but as a hero.
