Default New Bahamut concept art looks awesome

Square-Enix just released some new concept art for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, featuring Bahamut. Check out this badass:

Not someone you want to mess with.

There’s also concept art for Bahamut-related gear: a wicked looking helmet, a weapon, and some head pieces.

    Now I want them all.

Axe looks a bit silly. Rest looks all right.

Yeah the axe does look a bit silly, to be honest, with the golden cover on the actual blade. I'm not entirely sure what to think of the eyebrow cover, but the helmet looks sweet.

Dude, I think the axe looks cool. Won't lie, I thought it was a mage's staff at first, though...

Also, the last two headgears are pretty. :3

Yeah it looks pretty cool, but also entirely ineffective, hence the silliness. Though to be fair, that's not very uncommon for video game/comic book weapons.

It's about on par with the other primal weapons we've seen so far; the Ifrit weapons, for example, all somehow incorporate his horns while the Garuda weapons have her wings or talons in some form or another. That the axe uses Bahamut's wing as part of its design is no surprise.

Yes, it looks cool. I've just been spoiled by gear design that looks moderately functional as well as cool at the same time while playing FF11.

Why is the axe so useless?

Because of the gold edge/gold cover to the blade. Gold is a soft, malleable metal that is good for pretty decoration, but utterly useless for stabbing someone with. Moreover, the gold portion connecting the blade to the handle would easily bend.

Though as I said, such an emphasis for aesthetics over function in video games is not at all unusual. Hell, my favorite old school MMO, Ultima Online, had gold armor of all things.

Yes, but does real world transfer to game world?

To a certain extent, yes. Especially if it's possible to make cool design without making things look ridiculous.

What if all weapons in the game were made out of rubber, and still somehow pierced the heavy plate armor of your enemies? Real world doesn't transfer to game world!

It would be funny for a while, though.
