Why so angry? Because I was raised in a community of aboriginal people and I identify with them and am accepted as a member of that community. I understand that it's all well and good for people of privileged upbringings to say "you're lazy and alcoholics and no I don't want my tax money to try and bring you out of the third world" but I've seen it. My family lives it. There is that saying that you can't choose your family but I vehemently disagree. You can't choose who you are related to but your family are the people closest to you and you can choose them. I take it as personal offence whenever this sort of completely ignorant racism rocks up, and it was particularly pig-headed of my grandmother to spout that kind of stuff considering the fact she knows her daughter had worked in an Aboriginal Corporation for ~12 years and was deeply involved in trying to support the community and deal with tough issues like that. It pissed me off because here was a woman who was supposed to know better. I mean we didn't spend a lot of time together, it wasn't until she moved to that retirement home that she was sort of close enough for us to visit "regularly" but goddamn where is the empathy a Christian is supposed to demonstrate, even? Utter infuriating nonsense she was saying and it flicked a switch for me.

She's a pretty reserved kind of person I guess. I don't know quite how to explain it. I mean she was kind of shocked, I guess, and went quiet and I think was probably more offended that I started my tirade and was swearing than the fact I was actually disagreeing with her. I mean, she's conservative, that's the word I wanted. Yeah so she just went quiet and then the staff member came over and was like "yeah you need to leave now" and so I got up and followed her out.

The place is pretty nice, it's called Embracia (it's in Beerwah) and being in the Sunshine Coast hinterland there's a big natural focus so there's all these outdoor seating areas. So we were outside because it was a nice day and walked me out. The "lobby" I guess kind of splits off into wings and the main open area is in the middle so you walk straight up and into it through the doors. Pretty neat little set up all things considered.
