Default "Guilty pleasures" is a BS concept

It has come to my attention that the idea of a guilty pleasure is outmoded and rubbish. There are no guilty pleasures, only things that you do and do not like. If you like something, but are ashamed of it, that does not mean you have a guilty pleasure, it means you are an idiot.

We're living in a world where grown-ass adults openly laud Harry Potter, a series of children's books. Those of you of legal drinking age who sensibly do not give a rodent's hindquarter's about HP or any other children's entertainment most likely do not think any less of those who display the poor taste of approving of it on account of the fact that if you did, you would be depriving yourself of the company of scores of otherwise sensible individuals. Why, then, would you feel shame in enjoying...really...anything.

It's time to shed all of that incondign shame. What you like, you like. It's part of you. Stop pretending and start behaving like sane human beings.

I don't consider a guilty pleasure something to be ashamed of, as I long ago lost the ability to have shame (and who gives a smurf what other people think anyway). To me, a guilty pleasure is simply something you like, while at the same time you are capable of recognizing how bad it is.

Smallville, for example, was my guilty pleasure TV show for a while. I enjoyed it (at times, anyway), and I freely admit it, but I was able to recognize on an intellectual level that the show was not exactly top-notch quality.

But I do agree that no one should be ashamed of liking anything (except Twilight, pineapple on pizza, well done steak, and calling soda "pop"). So maybe we don't need to get rid of the "guilty pleasure" concept, but just eliminate one of its definitions.

The pedophiles will be so glad to hear that they have no reason to be ashamed of liking child porn!

That's not a guilty pleasure. That's being a smurfing disgusting worm that should be in jail. There's a slight difference between liking something that's unpopular and being a downright creeper.

I always took the term "Guilty Pleasure" a lot more lighthearted and fun than how you seem to be saying it. I don't think of it as something people are ashamed of, more like a tongue in cheek kind of ashamed.

That isn't a guilty pleasure, but it is how I will be misinterpreting the term from now on.

Random Person: What's your guilty pleasure?
Me: I quite like murdering prostitutes.

My guilty pleasure is grand theft. I feel so bad when I'm stealing all those TVs and stuff but then i get them home and I feel better.

My only reaction when someone says that what I like is trout is to inform them that they are wrong.

That's more than likely why the term was invented.

A guy was chatting with some other guys and admitted he really liked...I dunno, some hair metal or girl group band. Then when his pals started ripping into him he said "well I don't REALLY like it. It's just..a guilty pleasure."

    It's how I always justify liking t.A.T.u..
