Thread: Gameplay & Story Segregation

    Default Gameplay & Story Segregation

    The Sabin/Zell thread inspired this.

What gameplay moves just don't make any damn sense? They're nice and flashy and look cool but they're totally at odds with the story.

I remember if you fight on the Highwind in FFVII you can still summon and pretty much destroy huge chunks of the airship.
...only it'll be fine as soon as the animation is over.

Hell, any location you summon BahamutZERO on in FF7 would be a smoking crater, and just imagine if it was indoors.

I had a hard time reconciling how awesome summons were in FMV in FF9 compared to how relatively weak they were when you got a hold of them.

How Yuna can summon an Aeon to fly on yet you have to walk all the damn way to Zanarkand.

And I totally forgot about how lethal guns are in cutscenes vs. gameplay. FFX has a particularly egregious example of this when the party wades through about five waves of gun-wielding Warrior Monks before they are finally stopped by...a few gun-wielding Warrior Monks.

Cid's Highwind LIMIT while fighting Ultima aboard the Highwind.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

Cloud masquerading as a first class member of SOLDIER at the start of FFVII. He's a pussycat compared to the actual SOLDIER First Class in game. Yet no one thinks Cloud might be embellishing his actual abilities somewhat...
