I didn't find my first 2 dark swords until a few levels into the Cave of Darkness.
If I remember correctly, the first swords could be found in the Magic Knight town (Falgabard or something), which should be before the Cave of Darkness.

EDIT: Ow it IS the Cave of Darkness.
You're right. I'm an idiot and didn't find Falgabard until AFTER finishing the Cave of Darkness.
So I was right after all...
