Thief series
So, with SE Europe (aka Eidos) now working on Thief 4, it got me wondering about the Thief series. What are your experiences with it? Are any of the earlier games worth picking up? What about the Thief series makes it different to other games similar to it? Is it really a stealth game, or is a faux stealth game, where instead of being a thief you actually go around beating the crap out of people on a regular basis?

Thief 4? You...you made my day.
You didn't know? I guess it's always been very low profile. When the Eidos Montreal team finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the next big project of theirs was always Thief 4. They may have been distracted by making the multiplayer for Tomb Raider, but it's still (to my knowledge) the next big thing for them.
You didn't answer my questions, though!

I have never played any of these games. My friend raves about them and their stealth mechanics though.

Thief 2 is the best stealth game ever made and you should go buy it immediately. It's on Steam. Go go go!

Using a 4 for an E isn't stealthy. And it's beating the crap out of me!

Since you're being arsey about it: very positive, Thief 2, it's the best, it's a proper stealth game with no competition.
I don't buy games without having a good idea of whether they're going to be my cup of tea or not. >=]
Interesting... you know, I'm not sure I've ever played a proper stealth game. I've played games with a lot of stealth levels, or stealth elements, but they're generally still platformers/puzzle games/shooters/WRPG in the end.

Thief 2, man. Thief 2.
It has huge, open-ended levels filled with all sorts of nooks and crannies. Light and sound are incorporated into the stealth mechanic, which is sweet, and you can biff guards round the noggin if you need to. Also, if you cock up, you can defend yourself well enough, but the real joy in this game is stealthing it through without anybody knowing you were ever there.
I loved Thief 1 and 2! I just got them and 3 on Steam when they were on sale, hopefully I can play them soon.
