Did Final Fantasy II's delayed release in America help or hurt its popularity here? Assuming they'd had a similar turnaround time to Final Fantasy I, which was released in Japan in 1987 and then in America in 1990, that would've put Final Fantasy II's release here in 1991.
The NES lineup of 1991 isn't particularly notable, but since the SNES was released that year, it seems most companies jumped ship almost immediately. It would have been competing with that. It seems that Square's decision to skip II and III and simply localize IV and rename it II was something that made sense in the short term, but what effect has this had on the series' fanbase over time?
