I don't believe that at all.

I've seen cats beat the living trout out of dogs before. Usually mothers protecting their babies or whatever, but still. They'll scratch the smurf out of those dogs' faces if they come too close.

They need claws for that.

They don't necessarily need claws. A cat has attitude and it protects its territory. Dogs don't know that the cat has no claws and the cat probably doesn't realize this either. Their approach to the dog speaks all. No dog would come near my cat. She's start chasing them as soon as they came near our property line. And hissing, etc. Most dogs (unless they have never been scratched at all before) know how a cat scratches and they don't want any of it.
