Thumbs Down The Era of Awesome Film Reviews is Over

Roger Ebert passed away today at the age of 70 after battling Cancer. I used to use his film reviews in comparison essays I wrote for high school and uni. He offered some of the best insight in to film analysis. It's weird now knowing both Roeper and Ebert are gone. No more thumbs up.

Don't forget about Siskel! He died a while back as well. He was the original Roeper.

I actually meant Siskel instead of Roeper. I think Roeper is still alive. Didn't Siskel die from Cancer too or a stroke?

Not that I got into it too much, but I was never really impressed by the few of his reviews that I did read, and his tastes are a bit too low-brow for me.

God it seems I've been raking up a bodycount recently. RIP Ebert, you were pretty damn incredible and one of the biggest reasons I decided to get into film.

Well well well, Ebert dies of cancer, but I can still play videogames. Looks to me like Videogames are Art - 1, Roger Ebert - 0.

A great critic and it was very sad to hear the news. Like the best critics I may have not always agreed with him but his opinions were always interesting to read.

I didn't always agree with him, and often flat out disagreed, but his reviews were the first to show me the depth of intelligent critical analysis of film. I used to watch his show all the time, and read tons of his reviews. I always always admired his writing and in recent years, his tenacity in the face of cancer.

Ebert was a giant for being able to write insightful criticism in an extremely approachable way. Someone pointed out that he is largely responsible for making criticism entertainment, and I think that's a great thing.

Some friends and I are planning to watch Beyond the Valley of the Dolls next week in his honor.
