I believe it's Tifa.

Never was a fan of Clerith, her obsession over Cloud just because he reminded Aerith of her ex boyfriend Zack, it was just plain stupid and disgusting.

While it was intended by the developers for people to "decide from themselves, there is no right or wrong answer", the interest in Tifa is blatantly in everyone's faces while the "interest" in Aeris is left as merely a possibility. Really, the most obvious showing of love between Aeris and Cloud most certainly comes from Aeris, and she is merely confused as she sees a lot of Zach in Cloud due to Cloud taking on parts of Zach's life/personality during the ending of Crisis Core. Once Cloud knows who he really is, Aeris is already dead (and, as we see in Advent Children, happy in her death as she's now with Zach). On the other hand, Cloud finds himself having sex with Tifa. Some people might go around suggesting that they didn't actually have sex, but I really think those people need to break out of their denial - they obviously did, but it's not like they were going to plaster the words "THEY ARE HAVING SEX" all over the screen.

Alternative answers of Barret and Sephiroth are most certainly acceptable.

The latest Ultimania issue, did confirm (as it needed any of it, I mean it was fairly obvious in the game, especially in Cloud's psychic journey in the past) that his feelings towards Tifa are of romantic nature. I need to find that damn article.

I think Cloud had to realize with her death that Zack was also gone. Leaving no room for Aeris as she's already passed, he moves on. Then again, leaving it open to interpretation is important. I still cry watching Aeris die.

No one has bothered yet to ask the question, "Who says the guy's in love?"

But of course there would be no thread if that were accepted as an answer, so for the sake of argument, let's say Cloud is especially mature and capable of the depth of feeling that love calls for.

The mathematician's answer is "It depends on where in the game you are." You see, when Cloud is running around during the first half of the game, he really does believe that Zack does not exist, and that he is Zack, with one exception: his Mother is still vivid in his memory, though Jenova/Sephiroth manages to block the memories where she says things that would give their deception away.

On a subconscious level, Cloud has a preference for Aerith, until Tifa restores his true identity in the Lifestream. He is forced to question his attraction to Aerith once he knows its source (Zack Fair's orphaned memories), but feelings are feelings.

At the end of the day, he realizes that Tifa was his first love, and she belongs to him, and not to Zack, which makes him feel much more comfortable about his restored identity. Tifa becomes his anchor to sanity, and so he finally decides to break "The Friend Barrier" in his own awkward way. Tifa responds, because of course, by her own admission, fantasizing about Cloud became her pastime after he left.

So Tifa becomes Cloud's true love. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.

No, they can. Don't say what someone else can and can not do. I guess my grandma who got married when she was 19 and remained married to my grandfather for 44 years--until the day he died--didn't feel true love.

Same thing for my other grandparents. And countless couples I know. Same thing for myself.

I wasn't saying just for me personally, but the majority of young folks in that age group I know/see in -today's time- go on about "I'm so in love", but then it lasts for like 3 months. It's puppy love. Which more often than not, is the case. Congrats on breaking the mold.

And on that note, I think it's incredibly stupid when people date for 6 months (or whatever other short period of time - I personally still think a year isn't even long enough, but that's me), then get engaged and married.. But then I did the math and realized that my parents met like maybe a month after my dad got back from Vietnam and only dated for probably not even 6 months before they got married and then my mom was preggo like 3 months later. They're still together and happy. My dad can't survive without my mom for more than a few hours, actually without having a meltdown of some sort and destroying the RV they live in.

Which means... Cloud is in love with Tifa, but because of the off-chance that they might not save the world, it forces him to really dig deeper and kind of admit it more-so. Tifa too.

I'm 21 and I love my boyfriend. We have been together for over a year and a half. My last boyfriend I was with from when I was 14 to 19. That's 5 years. And he was an ass but I did love him. 21 year olds CAN love. Sure some say they love people when they don't because it's just lust and it only lasts a few months. That is by no means always the case.

Heck that applies to people in their 30's too.
