Loved this and can't understand what some people don't like about it. A lot of the complaints seem to boil down to "They changed the characters", but it's a freaking alternate universe.
Of course the characters are different. That's the whole point. There have also been complaints about the similarities to previous Trek films/episodes, which were obviously intentional homages, and some people have claimed Kirk didn't learn anything over the course of the film, which is pretty clearly directly contradicted by a number of plot events, such as
(SPOILER)the fact that, as he himself admits, he does what Spock would have done at the end of the film (while, of course, Spock does what Kirk would have done).
But yeah, great film, acting was perfect, effects worked nicely, soundtrack was up to the usual Giacchino standard and the plot didn't let up for a minute. Couldn't really have asked for much more.
