For MMO's I almost exclusively play DPS (which means I'm useless, bla bla bla). I tend to play them as if they were a single player game though, and that's easier to do with DPS I think. I'm good at not pulling extra mobs or anything like that though. I'm going to try being a tank on The Old Republic soon just to see if I'd be any good at it.

Rpg: I overlevel and try to break the system. Even though I have fun with battles and everything, what I care about is the story and I like to speed through whenever I can/make the game easier so I can just enjoy the story. On second play throughs, I like to explore everything and try to acquire everything (unless it is Excalibur II).

FPS: I run around, shoot things, and die. Sometimes I'll get a kill. I suck at these.

MOBA: Just started trying out LoL. Haven't really established what kind of player I am.

RPG - Like most have said, I tend to explore and do every possible sidequest before I advance the story. Doing sidequests replaces grinding for me, and I rarely ever grind. Grinding is an archaic RPG device and has no place in modern games. In terms of how I play my characters, I usually try to keep them in specific roles and it's typically based on physical appearance. RPGs usually reward specialists over balanced characters. In battle I stick with physical attacks and skills for regular battles, conserving my MP to go all out with magic on bosses. I also never use items unless it is really necessary, and I never by any items other than status heals for areas where that status becomes a problem.

MMO - I tend to favor classes with a bit of variety rather than standard DD or mage classes. In FFXI I was a Paladin due to the fact that it can tank/do damage/heal and also a Blue Mage since that class was a never ending bag of tricks. I don't mind playing the tank role or DD role but a strict casting role is kind of boring to me. I like having as many different things I can do in battle as possible. I also like classes that have some kind of MP pool or spell casting ability and I favor races with higher MP because that gives me more options.

FPS - I don't really like sniping and I hate melee (it's FPS not FPM). I usually like automatic weapons and my typical strategy is to use cover and then pop out to empty all my clips in a sort of blitz effort. Shotguns work well too: pop out and charge, blowing everything away with one point-blank blast. I tend to favor tank-like characters for survivability since I prefer that over finesse.

Disclaimer: I play in a Jack of All trades style overall, it always depends on the 'sitch. I tend to be the Core Gamer type w/8 hour as a average spent a day. I like games I can show my progress and can keep that progress I've made.

RPG - I love to Conquer and Own anything in games like Fable, Fallout or Elder Scrolls. While building my character up and progressing the story.

    Shooter
    - I tend to be the support role to great effect nowadays, I have gotten to jaded and played too many shooters to really dominate like a lone-wolf-one-man-army anymore. I may not be the top player on the scorebaord but I usually do alot of 'heavy lifting' so others can shine. I care about my teammates. Whether its TPS or FPS, it doesn't matter to me as long as it makes sense for the game I'm playing.

    Strategy
    - In Civilization and RTS types (more so) I love to just toy around with the AI and have intense battles with them. I always find that Human counter-parts sometimes lack 'patience' unlike AI, so I'm not a fan of RUSH your foe cause of it and it's not easy to pull off while defending home all the time if you do RUSH.

    MMO
    - Or what I refer to as MOs when they are great or good enough and dont spam you with micro-transactions and the like. I only play Guild-Wars/GW2 a MORPG and Blacklight Retribution a MOS since its a Shooter. It's only been very recent that I have picked up on MO's. I suppose Diablo 1-3 falls in this cat' too but its still an ARPG for PC at its core (on PS3 soon) ... I also love to play Lord of the Rings and FF11 <3

    Platformer
    - I tend to mostly play Nintendo games like Mario Bros, Yoshi & DK. Sonc The Hedgehog and more currently Blinx/Blinx-2 (Xbox Original) and Assassins Creed series, loving III still beating it.

Racing - I race on Circuit and Oval lap style maps. I play both Forza and Grand Turismo, soon I may adapt Drive Club. I mainly race when I have beaten most or all of the games I have had to a certain point. Also I love Porsche, Honda, and Audi. In F4 I love to race my 1979-Z28 Chevy Camero cause I actually own that as my main Car and its got a 428 engine (my Z28 does, not the in-game one).

    Fighting
    - in games like Soul Caliber I like to use Siegfried beyond the standard choice in SC5 I like making many types of fighters custom wise and surprising my competitor/foe. Then there is Super Smash Brothers on the N64, I love to use Kirby as a cannon to adsorb abilities and fire the weak opponent into the bottomless pits below the level then spam an fury of anvil brick attacks ontop of the unaware newly spawned opponent as a finisher, mostly I like Link Metriod, DK, Kirby, Fox & Mario and love to mash away at combos and watch the light-show commence. Then well Capcom's Street Fighter II and IV I love them both and I know most of Ryu, Guile, E Honda, Chun-Li and Blanka's move sets. Blanka is of course a favorite of mine. "Shockie! - Ar-ooooh! Ar-ooooh! Ar-ooooh!" LoL!

    Adventure
    - I play the Pikmen series which spans this for the exploration bit and some strategy and puzzle aspects as well, but adventure games are great for exploring, building, or even action. Other Games that fill this that I have enjoyed and played; Drakes Uncharted, Jak & Daxter series, The Last of Us (soon), Terraria, Minecraft, Fortress-Craft and many others. I like to take my time to look around if I have the opportunity and I usually love action-adventure types the most. While Pikmen and Minecraft fill that void of full on exploration for me.

games like Assassins creed i always play the side 'quests' first and when there are no more of those i contineu the main story. i always want to get the most out of the game.

as for normal games the story is my main priority!
