:monster: Final Fantasy Tactics S Shows of Two New Jobs

    fftacticss01.jpg

The trailer for Final Fantasy Tactics S is here! What you didn't know there was a new Tactic game coming out? Well, check out the video first and we'll tell you all about it!

If you didn't know, Square Enix has been working on bringing the Final Fantasy Tactics series back so you can once again join the world of Ivalice. This time though it'll be a social game. Now now, don't groan just yet. You can create clans with your friends to expand your group. Up to nine players can be on the field which happens to be a little flat. This most likely is from the fact that it is a mobile game. You can choose to spend gil on gear and recruiting more members. You get it through a series of quests.

There will be over 300 jobs for you to choose from but two new ones have recently been added. The Air Samurai and the Musician.

Mobage is in charge of this game and seeing as their parent company, DeNA, was the one to localize the previously super fun Airborne Bridage, this one might see a localization fairly soon. The game is already available in Japan with no word on a western release as of yet. Check out some screenshots!

If you haven't given the Mobage mobile entries a try, as a fan, I suggest them. Even for a few time consumingly fun moments. Will you play a new tactics game?

What about the viera one? That one is definitely new.

Anyway, looks waaaaay too simplistic for a Tactics game. :/

Yeah, don't groan yet. Wait until you actually see how much they've butchered the series.

    Then groaning won't be enough.

I'm sorry, this isn't even a Tactics game. Two teams lining up across from each other and just duking it out with no movement, no facing, no terrain bonuses, none of the actual tactical decisions that the series is NAMED FOR.

I was thinking of buying this anyway, just to support the Tactics series, even though I hate the iOS as a gaming platform. But this? This isn't even a Tactics game. This thing doesn't even deserve that. If this is how the series is going to continue, then I want it to end. At least after the three great entries we have had before, it could die with dignity and fond memories.

I'll be going back to Fire Emblem Awakening now. At least Intelligent Systems still understands what the Tactical RPG genre is.

Yes hold the moan and groaning. As someone who regularly plays and enjoys the other mobage FF entry, Airborne Brigade, this game doesn't seem too bad. While yes it doesn't have as much tactical aspect as the normal tactics, it most likely will still have some tactical aspects to it. Regardless of that it'll still be entertaining and addictive like Airborne Brigade.

Also the Mobage games are free.

It actually looks very reminiscent of Ogre Battle which I do count as a tactical game.

This looks interesting but I'll do a wait and see approach before I get interested. I do like the art style, its getting a bit more whimsical looking.

I never really considered Ogre Battle a tactics game. I had fond memories of it, though. At least, up to a point. It got frustrating the further it went on because of how little control it gave you over what happened. All the work was in the preparation, combat played out with too little input (and the AI sucked, as that video you linked showed).

Although, to be fair, if they iron out the issues Ogre Battle had, I can actually see this having promise. While I wouldn't term it a Tactics game, I would say that this might actually be a fun game that is actually well suited to touch controls.

It actually lost me when I read 300 jobs. With that many it is just about guaranteed that they will be very shallow to non-existent in the character set up department.

I thought that it might have been a good idea when I saw that it would be online and social-based as tactical games with a multiplayer element can be successful, like that French massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Dofus, but then I saw that there was no movement or advanced strategy in the mechanics of the game. Forget it.
I believe in the power of humanity.

I agree, but I'm also guessing that they mean race/job combos, rather than just jobs. So a Gria Hunter and a Hume Hunter would be two different jobs.

That's most likely what they mean with that.

My main concern is that it will be another cash grab like All the Bravest with maybe a handful of jobs for each race and then you have to pay to get the other classes. The more I think about the details I know, the more I feel this will ultimately be a shameless cash grab like All the Bravest. The set-up is too similar, but perhaps the gameplay might actually be more worthwhile.

I do consider Ogre Battle to be a tactical game, I just place it in the wide umbrella of Tactical games which includes SRPGs, and RTS, because frankly Ogre Battle is more like an RTS than an SRPG. I agree the original has some kinks in it, but I still had a blast because I like set-up style games. Its part of the reason I love FFXII because so much of the game is really in just prepping your party.

I'm not hating on Mobile Games, I'm hating on SE trying to bleed me dry. I feel games like Final Fantasy Dimensions and FF Air Brigade are good games on mobile devices, but as All the Bravest and TheaterRhythm have shown, SE likes to use the platform to get a bit more money out of fans. "I'm hating the playa, not the game".

I'm waiting to hear more but based on what I do know, the set-up is a bit eerily familiar..

I'll stop hating on mobile games when mobile games stop sucking.

I've played a lot, actually. From android tablets to cell phones, I've played a lot of mobile games. And, generally, they are all pretty bad, and usually for similar reasons.

Touch controls are simply too imprecise. They work well for a very, very limited margin of games. Games like Bejeweled and Peggle work really, really well with touch controls.

But as games get more complicated, the imprecision of the control interface suddenly cripples the game. Look at Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy Dimensions. Even moving around in those games is a hassle because of the touch screen.

Heck, even Angry Birds suffers because of the lousy touch controls, as trying to line up a pixel-perfect shot is essentially impossible.

There are a handful of games that use touch controls well, but the vast, overwhelming majority of mobile games suffer because of the control scheme. And nothing that Square-Enix has produced has shown me anything different.

Hopefully someone will produce a cell phone with an analog nub and a few buttons, and then maybe cell phones will have a chance at being a decent platform for games.
