I don't agree if they are segregated, that's wrong but regardless of color you should be forced to wear pink and work your ass off to pay for you food and board. I have multiple friends who have spent time in federal and state prisons. they come home and act like they were at summer camp seeing all their long last friends. And the amounts of people and their reasons for being there are an entirely different subject that I think most everyone can agree, needs to be fixed. But that does not mean that those who deserve to be rotting in there should have a happy go lucky time.
Dehumanizing people who have committed crimes has been shown to increase recidivism. The prison system already stigmatizes people who have been in, to the point that felons will have difficulty ever getting jobs beyond menial labor - which makes crime an even more appealing option to support themselves. The modern prison system is a failure in almost every way and making it more brutal towards inmates only serves to make the problems worse.
It doesn't help that prisons in the US are run by private corporation who make a profit on recidivism
