When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about new discoveries of human evolutionary history, which suggest that there was a human-like dwarf species in existence for some time.
So yes, hobbits were real, but they died out because of their shortness and hairy feet and their home being destroyed by Sauron's forces.
Some of my teachers from back when I was at school are living proof that Hobbits are real.
