This is what I meant when I put vays. If it ride with rays, I would've put vayz.

Vays looks too much like lays, rays, bays, days, ways and so forth to me xD Something spelled like that is usually said with a "z" sound at the end, thus my confusion.

Well, NORMALLY American English has bastardized the pronunciation of words from their original British English form, but that's actually not the case here. The original British English pronunciation is the one that rhymes with 'race.' This is evident in the many rhymes by British poets using the word from hundreds of years ago, like your friend and mine, Lord Byron.

I don't understand how or why modern British English speakers say it differently than older British English speakers clearly did. They're forced, however, to concede that either a) all other American English language changes are valid and correct, or b) the way they say "vase" is wrong.
