I'm planning on giving Starship Troopers a watch tomorrow. Network will probably have to wait until the weekend.

A few late thoughts on Starship Troopers~

One of the things I like about Starship Troopers is how ahead of itself it was, not only in sci-fi terms, but in terms of equality. I hate to pull the female equivalence issue, but it was sortof refreshing to see high-ranking female officers, non-issues of men and women showering together, females on the football team, etc etc. Film over the years has lightened up on the separation of men and women in such circumstances, but this film was made in 1997, and the fact that it makes non-issues out of things that appear to somewhat still be an issue is refreshing.

Second was violence. I'm not a gore whore and I think over-displays of violence are usually inserted into films in order to draw some sort of mass appeal with special effects and crap like that. There is a damn considerable amount of violence in this film, but it all applies to the story and I don't think any of it was really needless. I also liked how even though there was a lot of violence, the camera didn't really seem to focus on it. For example, when the private gets shot in the head during the training exercise. They show it happening, and you can clearly see it occur. The camera pans back as Rico calls for a medic, and that's that. When the black private's arm gets fired on by the huge bug tanker that comes out of the ground, you watch it disintegrate, and that's that for the shot. I like the fact that the violence is fast-paced and you can catch it happening, but they don't sit there and wallow on the special effects for you to "fully absorb" what's happening. You just kindof have to move right along with it like the characters do. That makes it seem more realistic to me.

Sci fi is my absolute favorite genre. I don't give a trout how campy this movie is, I just love it. I'm surprised at how much I remembered watching it again, but also how much I forgot, I suppose!

    also lol joe smith fort

I've never heard of Network! Looking forward to it.

Ooo, Network is a good pick. I was just thinking of that film yesterday because a promo for the Newsroom came on that reminded me of it. It reads like a dictionary though. No one talks like that.

I have to catch up. Didn't watch Starship Trooper yet and never did so mark spoilers plz? :3

"god dammit johnny rico why didn't you bang dizzy while you two were in high school instead of going after denise richards who was clearly not right for you"

We really were. Every time Johnny Rico cock-blocked himself, we screamed. And then they had sex and it lasted 20 minutes. And when Dizzy dies she says, "It's okay...because I got to have you." YEAH FOR TWENTY MINUTES SHEESH.

What I love most about Starship Troopers is that it's a great movie in so many ways. If you watch it for the camp and teh lulz, it's so perfect. But if you're seriously sitting down and watching it to enjoy a good movie, it still works!

Plus you get to see Nazi NPH, soooo.

Watched Network today. It was very good! Different then any sort of movie I've seen before. The satire was very well done and many parts were hilarious and had Miriel and I laughing hysterically.

I thought Faye Dunaway (Diane) was excellent and I'm not surprised she won the Oscar. It's rare to see such a strong female lead with obvious flaws. The scenes where she was continuing to talk about work through dinner and the walk on the beach and then sex was brilliant.

Peter Finch (Howard Beale) was also great. Miriel commented that Beale was the first Glenn Beck and that's so true, right down to the fear of Arabs! I also never knew the line 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!' came from this movie.

The ending had me hanging on a thread to see if they would actually pull it off, and I can't believe that they did! But I guess that's fitting for the type of movie this was.

Also Robert Duvall was excellent as usual. Surprised he didn't get a Supporting Actor nod, but I don't know anything about 1976 movies.

    Excellent pick, Rantz.

    on The Network.

I liked the Shakespearean-esque dialogue. Particularly the usage of "cocksmanship".

So Nicky's pick is Boy? Is it ok to update the thread? Do people still need time to watch Network (you really should)? Are more than four people even still doing this?

Nicky mentioned this movie a while ago and I completely forgot to watch it, but this week-ish I will do so.

Updated the thread title! Someone else will most likely need to change the title for next week as I will be unavailable.

Nicky, I'm not certain if I will be able to watch yours before I go But I will catch up on it and post my thoughts!

    May I join this club?

It seemed fitting once I realized you started out with my favorite movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

So has anyone actually watched the movie they were asked to watch? I have seen it already (obviously, I guess), and pretty recently at that.
