I miss non-human playable characters. Humans are boooooriiiing. Give me a Cait Sith. A Quina. Hell even a Gau would be cool, even though he's human.

    More Chocobos and Moogles!
It would be great if they had some racial variety again. I'd be absolutely astounded if a non-human character took front-and-center instead of some woobie gorgeous human guy/girl.
I miss the good old moogles, too. They keep changing them up to look all derpy...

    Back to turn based combat.

At this point, probably a retro title a la FFIX where it's got the sensibilities of an older title (turn-based combat, whimsical character designs) but still using modern hardware. Not being console exclusive would likely help too since I feel like we're past that point now in gaming culture.

What would excite me, is if you could summon Rick Astley to rick roll his enemies, dazzling them in confusion

Going really heavy on the 'fantasy' part!

Non-humans. This could be non-humanoids like animals that talk, or perhaps giants or fairies or something similar, so certain characters can go places others can't. Hi, FFVII.

Environments that are surreal and otherworldly, places that scream "this is not Earth". Hi, FFX.

A genuinely interesting and 'new' story with twists and turns that aren't predictable and can surprise people. This is probably the hardest part, because so many stories have been done, but again E33 shocked me with just how amazing they put together their worldbuilding and plot in a way I've never seen before.

Perhaps a little more light-hearted than XVI where I felt I was a dead horse being beaten...

EDIT: Honestly I wouldn't be against the idea of something completely underwater, as a good example of what levels of surreal it could be. Could even bring back blitzball...
    Bow before the mighty Javoo!

I largely agreed with this until you tried to bring Blitzball back.
