I have both of these games new, sealed-in-box and have yet to play them (they were presents and I am a very bad friend). Is it worth my time to try either of them out? How do they compare to, say, VIII and IX? One assumes not favourably.

Heck, I'd give them a shot because you never know otherwise. I wouldn't listen to other people's opinions and judge them before trying them out. Neither are like VIII, IX or really any of the other games. It's own thing, yet follows some aspects to keep the name. I'm still slowly working through XIII-2 and eventually I will probably replay XIII. I am not crazy about either, and XIII, for me, would pretty low ranking of the series. The story is kinda linear...ok, really linear, but that may not bug you. A lot of people love them, and you could be one of them. What can it hurt trying?

If you already have them give them a shot, a few hours of each should tell you whether they are for you. I personally disliked XIII, but I enjoyed the bit of XIII-2 I played a lot. Some of our members think XIII is the bees knees, others the bees stinger. You wont know until you try them.
This post brought to you by the power of boobs. Dear lord them boobs. Amen
Pretty much what everyone else has said. It was received much like a lot of other FF games (ie it splits the fans) and you need to play it yourself to see how it fits with you.
Tbh they're not bad games. XIII-2 inparticular is quite good.
