The phrase "blood is thicker than water" is used to indicate that family ties take priority over friendships. However, I've read this is taken from an older quote, which is:

"the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" meaning that two men who go through a bonding ritual have a stronger bond than two men who share a birth mother.
