This is probably my favorite video game fan theory ever. After I read about it I immediately started playing the game again with that theory in perspective and it was a lot of fun!

As for "it was all a dream/it was never real" in fiction in general, as a twist I think it's great sometimes. It only really bothers me when it's used as a sort of "reset" button to maintain the status quo.
