All the later games are much longer than all the earlier games. I think VIII took me almost 80 hours to complete, which would never have been the case with the NES/SNES era games.

Only have played VIII so I can't give a fair comparison when I've played just about every main entry in Final Fantasy. I want to play more Dragon Quest, but IX is only for the DS, X will be a MMO, the PS1 entries aren't available on PSN, and the SNES and NES ones are effin expensive on amazon and ebay.

I think Dragon Quest VIII is good but I prefer Final Fantasy, except some of them.

Dragon Quest is the one which you drag coffin to the church for resurrection right? That really confuses me when I visited the church when I was a kid. The people in the coffin did not get resurrected in the church I visited.
