I got Ys I & II Chronicles+ during the Steam winter sale. I'm close to beating Ys 1 now, and I must say it's pretty good. The style is right down my alley for sure. There's some delicious pixel art in this game. The music in one of the dungeons was super energetic.

I had heard bad things about the bump combat, but I'm enjoying it. I like a game that takes a simple idea to its extreme. Ys gave it a good try, though could've done better. I would've liked to see more variety in what the enemies do, like different movement patterns to make combat trickier, or ranged attacks. Mostly the enemies just charge at you, some faster than others.

For a game from 1987, the plot is decent. I like games where the plot is implied and delivered by atmosphere and setting and gameplay, rather than spoon-fed to the player.

One complaint is that the Steam version of these games is buggy as crap. It took me a while to get it to recognize the config file, and longer to get the cutscenes to work.
