I'm going to start off with the things I like about the franchise because if I went on about all the things I don't I'm going to be here for a while.

Resident Evil was one of the first PlayStation games my brother bought so I would watch him play it a lot before finally playing myself and it used to terrify me. 2 ended up being even scarier than that and Nemesis made me jump out of my seat. I didn't care for Survivor all that much (no one did) and I loved Code Veronica X, the Resident Evil remake on Gamecube, the prequel Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil Outbreak.

I would eventually go back to the first game and beat it, then the remake, and finally Nemesis. I got pretty far in both 2 and CV before quitting. My favorite characters are pretty much everyone from the first game and Claire and Sherry from the second. Never got far on Outbreak but I love those games for the simple fact you have NPCs with you trying to survive instead of just being on your own all the time. My favorite tyrants are the ones from the first three games.
