Vegeta did not know they could use the metamoran fusion to become Gogeta, he did not know Goku's power, Goku had no time left and did not want to show his full power and Gohan was not Ultimate yet so this was not meaningless, especially as his heart was pure after this action so Goku could become a God with his help. And my example was more for the action not for what happened afterwards as that is not meant to be.
