Yeah, pretty much summed it up for me. The characters and the portraits look awful. Some of the monsters and the backgrounds look pretty good actually. However, I do hate the character models and as they're something that I would like to look good, and which look rather bad, that probably explains my view.
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.
Final Fantasy IV got a full 3D upgrade.
Final Fantasy VII got a straight steam port.
Final Fantasy X got a full HD upgrade.
So of the three previous styles, I think all would have been acceptable. But they did something weird, and that's stupid. The one time you want Square Enix to like, stay in character, they cock it up. It's just... why? Why touch it at all? A friend of mine has been emulating FFVI on his phone for years and it looks fine, there was no need to like... whatever they did. Outsourcing, if that is the case, is clearly worse a decision. Maybe everybody needs to stop touching Final Fantasy for a while.
EDIT: yes and I know this is a mobile version not an upgrade for a new platform but smurfing hell surely it would've made more sense to just hotwire it for a mobile as opposed to redoing the entire smurfing in grossy mcgross style
Yeah, I think VI could've used a bit more of a graphical upgrade than what they did, although I doubt we'll ever see it.
On the characters, while I don't think they're as charming as the originals and I'm not a fan, they're not irredeemably bad and an affront to humanity either. I've seen a lot worse.
A'hoy matey! Thar be screenshots inside that spoiler tag!

The empire is alive and well in sepia times.

I tried tempting the fates and used an emoticon for Locke's name. The game didn't seem to care...

Some people have a barrel of monkeys. I have a party of moogles.

I almost forgot to grab a screen shot of the battle with the Marshall before he bit the dust. This is actually the killing blow being landed. Talk about great timing.

Well golly-gee-willickers, the screenshots are still coming!

I could be mistaken but I believe that other than the spring in the cave to South Figaro there aren't any other recovery springs or buckets...

I think I found the first script typo:

Optional world map overlay:

While Figaro Castle looks tiny, it has a lot of detail, as does South Figaro, coming up later. I'm curious to see if the higher resolution/detail plays into how towns are displayed in simulated mode7 graphics.

I saw this person lying in bed and thought it would make for some steamy conversation. I was sorely disappointed...

I figured out what I don't like about the sprites. They have a black border which shows up on lighter environments. The sprites feel like they are floating above the environment rather than being a part of it.

The mobile version has a new feature called an Album. It shows a series of plot summaries with a screen shot from that point during the story.
