Maybe there's a generation of gamers who like this style because they didn't grow up with pixels? That's the only thing I can think of.

Why do mobile games always look like a cross between freeware Flash games and Playskool-branded Sesame Street toys?

Way better than what SE crapped out. Still not as good as SNES.

Considering anything with some actual hard lines breaking up the characters is superior to something as washed out as what was actually released, I have to agree with you. Plus that style actually looks good on it's own merits.

I like to think that in some cases the recognition of bad art and design transcends any generation gap.

If there is a generation of gamers not offended by this art style then they are most certainly going to be offended by the game. How many of them do you think would play a Final Fantasy game, especially an OLD one. I mean GOSH.

I have a distaste for the character models, but perhaps in an original game I would not mind them so much. It's just that I cannot see anywhere near the level of personality they managed to convey through a couple of smurfing pixels like two decades ago. The fact that the character models and background don't go together at all as well is shameful. Look, I'm not someone who places a lot of emphasis on graphical quality but this is just offensive and I find the entire practice indicative of Square Enix's lost grasp of reality. They do not know what fans want and they do not know how to give it to them even if they did.

This upsets me because I have such fond memories.

Even in an original game I wouldn't like those characters. They're too soft and washed out. It's very hard for the eye to distinguish between different parts of them at a glance. Pretty sad considering what the original did with far fewer pixels.

I'm surprised no one's commented on the hint system.

Come on Square, it's not that easy to get lost in FFVI

Oh yeah, I actually meant to comment on that initially but got distracted by the nicer artwork The Man posted. The game's pretty explicit about telling you where to go, and considering how linear most of the first half is I just don't see the need for the hints. By the time the game really opens up you've explored the entire map anyway.

I can't bring myself to care too much about that because (a) it's optional and (b) it's primarily there for people who put the game aside for months as is presumably more likely to happen with cell phone games. The interface for it is just as hideous as the rest of the game though.

Piss off. Just because you don't like cel-shading doesn't mean other people who do like it are ignorant.

I can't see a mouth. I know this is a strange comment, esp. given that mouths were absent in VII, but come the smurf on man we have the ability to render a mouth on some sprites these days.

Was thinking about that last night, I was awful at FF VI and still managed to know where to go next.

Not to sound awful, but is Generation Z? Dumb or something ? Or does Square think that we are dumb ?

People are dumb in general regardless of generation. I submit every stupid warning label that had to be written to avoid ridiculous lawsuits as evidence.

So... replace Gen Z with people and I find a combination of the two to be true.

I agree that the sprites could use a bit more work in places, but if you're honestly arguing those are worse than the blobs of color Square came up with then I think it may be you who needs their eyes checked. At least these ones are readable.

I pray I never find out to be honest. And unless someone posts a picture I never will.
