For me it's a toss-up between Xenoblade Chronicles and Bravely Default.

Besides the first two and online?
The first two and Online don't have creepy uncanny valley potato faces.

Also you'd best not be hating on Arena and Daggerfall.

    Or Redguard, for that matter.

(Battlespire was buggy as fetch so you can hate on that one just a little bit.)

Wow, I'm kinda envious. This is a really good generation for you then. I've had trouble getting into games for a long while now and it's making me sad that I tend to miss out on the great ones, even if I own them (which in this case I do and/or will)

My favorites always default to things like Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI/VII, KotOR I/II, or old Shining Force. Really can't wait for the next game to really grab me and not let me go. Here's hoping Bravely Default does it. Xenoblade Chronicles tried to, but my girlfriend hated it so much I had to stop playing because her complaining was ruining it for me

    GET A NEW ONE!

Morrowind, Fire Emblem 7 and Xenoblade are top contenders for me.

If the demo is any indication, Bravely Default will, easily.

If you haven't played the demo yet, play the demo. It is one of the best crafted demos I have ever seen. It gives a great indication of how the game will play out, while still leaving plenty beyond your reach, including the entire story, since the demo has its own quests. It also manages to achieve the rare feat of being both enticing and satisfying. There is a lot of content in the demo (I clocked in at about 9.5 hours to do everything), and you can "master" aspects of it. Sure, the demo jobs only progress up to about a quarter of how far they progress in the main game, but even still, mastering them lets you play with the customization and get a sense of accomplishment. Rebuilding the town works in a similar fashion, as you feel very satisfied when you complete it, even though you know in the main game, there will be a lot more to it. Fantastic demo, and it looks to be a fantastic game.

I would probably have to wait a few more years to see if my opinions hold up, but my standard answer to this question would be that of the RPGs that I have beaten, Tales of the Abyss is my favorite.

    HOWEVER
Of RPGs that I am currently in the process of playing, it is a toss up between Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story, and Grandia.

Honorable mentions to FF Tactics, Tales of Phantasia and Symphonia, as well as Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu and Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken (the American one).

Semi-related note I love Persona 4, but a I'm playing through the Golden Version, the battles feel simplified. Maybe the standard difficulty mode was tweaked to be easier in addition to all the new bonus skills the characters learn, but I don't feel like I have to think as much while dungeon crawling. Or I could be developing new tastes, who knows? I'll have to try the Golden on a harder difficulty.

FFVII (Which is also my favourite game ever), and Fallout 3. Yep - Fallout 3. Leave me alone.

I certainly enjoyed it, just not to the extent of Fallout 3.
I think the reason for me was that The Mojave just didn't feel like a post apocalyptic world like The Capitol Wasteland did, everything just seemed so...together. In 3 I could get away from the story and go find some random areas, towns and people that had nothing to do with the BoS or Enclave, whereas in NV I felt like everything was to do with NCR and Cesar's Legion, and everyone you spoke to had an opinion on one of them, or had a quest related to them. Sometimes I just wanted to get away from all that.

I dunno, I'm probably not giving the game a fair shake, since I did think the majority of it was excellent, but one of the huge reasons I like 3 was the world which cancelled out a lot of its flaws. I just felt so immersed and could spend hours just walking around and exploring places like The Republic of Dave and Andale was really exciting, I thought NV lacked a lot of that.
