If you are starting a thread that is to discuss spoilers, please do not include any spoilers in the thread title and give adequate warning in your opening post about what areas of the game will be spoiled if people read further. Various threads are being created to discuss the various storylines within the game without the need for spoiler tags. In these threads, the first post will include a large warning. (SPOILER)Lightning actually turns everyone in the game into fayth, revealing that this would actually one day become Spira. After doing this, she changes her name to Hyne and disappears from the world as the world fights her for power. She leaves a piece of herself behind though, starting a line of what would become sorceresses. She was weakened, but still powerful when she fled. Some say she was driven insane and would one day become what we call Ultimecia, but this is rumor. Canonically, she travels to a place known as the World of Ruin. Already devastated upon her arrival, she takes control of the planet (which had been reduced to an asteroid pretty much), and crash lands it onto another planet. She fights there but eventually is defeated and locked away. She is eventually found by a company by the name of Shinra who then locked her away and started harvesting her cells to inject into their soldiers. The rest, as they say, is history.
