I don't like Sonic anymore.
Jack: How do you know?
Will: It's more of a feeling really.
Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?
Will: No.
If Demolition Man were remade today
Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
Huxley: NO!
Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
Spartan: But Huxley.
Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.
By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.
Advent Children and Cloud. He was never a gigantic bucket of self-indulgent emo in the game. In the game, Cloud was often the straight man to the insanity unfolding all around him. Yeah he had a brief spirit quest but beyond that he was either a gigantic dick to people being idiots or having a god damn laugh - going cross dressing, diving into hot tubs with gay men or doing random stupid poses everywhere.
Funny thing is, everyone saw Cloud as the self-indulgent emo long before the movie came about. Not sure where it came from, because you're right. He was pretty gruff in the game
That's probably got a lot to do with how Cloud changed toward the end of the game, and what likely happened to him in the aftermath. He got way more sombre and self-doubting after his experiences in the Lifestream, when he realised that most of his adult memories were delusion. He blamed himself for an awful lot that had happened, and once it was all over I can easily see him sliding into a funk of regret and purposelessness.
Considering everything he went through, and everything the world went through, I'd have found Advent Children a lot harder to swallow if Cloud had been a happy little wellspring of joy.
I think I'd agree. Which reminds me; I still need to watch the newer release of Advent Children that people seem to not hate quite as much. I forget even what they added to make it more palatable to everyone
I own both versions and I'm hard-pressed to identify the differences. Some altered scene placements. Perhaps one extra scene that was slightly better than the theatrical version. Also, Omnislash V"6"... seriously...

I'm having a hard time thinking of any examples. Even if a writer completely drops the ball in subsequent releases I think the sanctity of the character is somehow preserved. That's not to say it doesn't suck, but to completely ruin a loved character? That's no easy feat.
Except that I feel that, by the end of the game, he moves out of that. Honestly, I don't even think it lasts that long after the Lifestream incident. He pulls out of it (or is pulled out of it, rather) fairly quickly.
"Alright people, let's mosey."
Not the words of a super depressed individual.
The problem is, the fanbase got so obsessed with the Lifestream moment (because it was, admittedly, an utterly fantastic character moment) that it overwhelmed Cloud's actual personality.
My friend Delzethin is currently running a GoFundMe account to pay for some extended medical troubles he's had. He's had chronic issues and lifetime troubles that have really crippled his career opportunities, and he's trying to get enough funding to get back to a stable medical situation. If you like his content, please support his GoFundMe, or even just contribute to his Patreon.
He can really use a hand with this, and any support you can offer is appreciated.
But on top of everything that happened in the game, he was also left with a world in ruins, a dead friend, and a freakin' terminal illness - I really can't fault the man for being a bit of a sad sack after enduring all that.
Except that it's a step backward in his personal development arc, which makes it poor storytelling, and it's incredibly boring, which makes for poor entertainment.
Also, let's ignore the terminal illness. And everything else that came out of the Compilation. Let's judge him by his appearance in FFVII, where his mopey, emo personality really feels out of character by the end. The world is shown to be on an upward path from the first time since Shinra started. His relationships are genuinely positive (even the Aerith one ends on an upward note compared to what it had been earlier). And he is finally restored back to being the sane, awesome dude that was fun to be around. Why throw all of that away?
