I've had bears lazing around under my pear tree eating pears, jumping up onto my deck to grab garbage bags that were waiting for the garbage truck... even though there was no food scraps to speak of in the bags, however, they still know what a garbage bag is for and won't go home without checking them all out. I put up a six foot high fence so they would not be able to come into my back yard, but who was I trying to fool... they just climb over it and still eat the apples and pears. At least they used to until humans cut down all the greenspace behind my house and put up a subdivision.
