I've been having decent luck with a wizard, a couple of meatier warriors/knights/terror knights/dragoons, an archer, and Canopus flying around sniping crap. I have a cleric around to help with healing but if my dudes go down I just plow through the enemies until I've won.

Ninjas are cool except for the item cost for ninjutsu
