The Song That Defines The Game
Mission: Pick One Song and only One Song off the soundtrack of a Final Fantasy. This song must perfectly capture the essence of the game in your opinion.
Example:
Final Fantasy X -Someday The Dream Will End The fact it plays when you get to Zanarkand has helped reinforce the fact this is the song for FFX. It captures in it all the tragedy and longing inherent in this bittersweet tale.
Final Fantasy V - The Day Will Come.
Final Fantasy VI - Aria di Mezzo Carattere. Because it's that ICONIC SCENE.
Although I could see Terra's theme too.
God I need to replay FF6.
Final Fantasy X - To Zanarkand
Sorry for immediatly contradicting yours, but to me To Zanarkand is EXACTLY what FFX is about. And honestly, for the same reasons as you said Fleeting Dream was the defining track. ^^
Keep in mind that I've never gotten that far in this game, but I can't think of Tactics without hearing that very first song in my head:
Pick one song then defines/represents the entire series, or just the game it comes from?
Because if it's the whole series, obviously Prelude is the only choice!

Final Fantasy II ~ The Rebels
Final Fantasy III ~ Eternal Wind
At this point it gets really hard for some of these.
Final Fantasy IV ~ Theme of Love
The Red Wings and the Lunerians would have been my second choices
Final Fantasy V ~ Dear Friends
Battle on the Bridge and Home, Sweet Home would have been my second choices
Final Fantasy VI ~ Aria di Mezzo Carattere
Terra's Theme would have been my other choice
From here it gets progressively easier...

Final Fantasy VIII ~ Liberi Fatali
Eyes on Me would have been my second choice. Though I'm also partial to The Successor
Final Fantasy IX ~ Melodies of Life
You're Not Alone would be my second choice.
Final Fantasy X ~To Zanarkand

Final Fantasy XIII ~ Blinded by the Light
I won't bother with the spin-off series or sequels.
True beauty exists in things that last only for a moment.
